Khanal Joined Nepali Congress

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 26, 2013 - Former Finance Secretary Rameshor Khanal, who rose to fame with his anti-corruption stand against the then government and consequent resignation, has joined Nepali Congress Monday.

NC president Sushil Koirala welcomed Khanal in the party's central office at Sanepa, Lalitpur amid a ceremony participated in by NC's other senior leaders.

Addressing the function, Koirala said it is a matter of pride to welcome an economic expert like Khanal to NC.

NC vice president Ram Chandra Poudel said NC will hand over respectful responsibility to Khanal.

Khanal, in return, said his aim is to lift Nepal from a least developed country to a developing country. "Nepali Congress does what it speaks. This fact drove me towards the party," he said.

Khanal was in line for the coveted post of chief secretary before he resigned as finance secretary in March 2011. It was due to his growing rifts with the then finance minister on the issue of taking action against the VAT bill evaders and transfer of government employees.

Khanal later served as the economic adviser of the then Prime Minister, Baburam Bhattarai, who is a senior leader of UCPN (Maoist). News Source: Nepalnews.com
