Army can be assigned security role in election: Pokhrel

CPN-UML secretary Shankar Pokhrel said on Tuesday that the national army can be assigned some key role by the government, so as to maintain security in the upcoming Constituent Assembly polls.

"The task of ex-combatants' integration concluded on Monday as part of the Comprehensive Peace Accord. It has opened door for Nepal Army to be mobilized nationwide," Pokhrel said while speaking at an interaction program in Kathmandu.

Meanwhile, addressing a separate program in the capital, former chief election commissioner, Bhojraj Pokhrel urged media to not drag the national army into controversy. "It is very much valid that the army be utilized for election purposes," said Pokhrel.

"Previously, too, the national army was not sitting idle, as it was fulfilling security-related roles at the time of election. I urge the media to not make it an issue when the army provides security during election," he said. Nepalnews.com
