KATHMANDU, AUGUST 23, 2013 - The bird flu-hit poultry farmers of Bhaktapur Friday clashed with police during a protest demanding due compensation to their business, as they lost millions of rupees following the mass culling drive of the government.
The protesters said the government’s compensation to them for declaring Bhaktapur as a ‘bird flu emergency district’ and subsequent culling of entire fowl stocks, which was thousands in number, was very meager.
The protesters picketed the district livestock office and were about to padlock it, before the police intervened. Seven poultry farmers and three policemen were injured in the clash.
Talks were arranged between the agitators and the livestock office later, but it failed to yield results. The protesters then resorted to sit-in protests in front of the district administration office.
“We want compensation in line with our investment costs. Interest of bank loan must be waived. Poultry farmers must be provided new bank loan at the rate of one percent interest, so that we can revive our business,” said Tulsiram Dhakhwa, chairman of poultry farmers’ association of Bhaktapur.
“There must be immediate compensation to the destruction of poultry eggs and the culled chicken,” added Dhakhwa, as quoted by the state news agency, RSS. Nepalnews.com
