Two workers die in steel factory fire

August 25 - Two workers died when a steel factory caught fire in Bara district on Saturday.

The fire broke out in Bhagawati Steels located inside Birgunj-Pathalaiya industrial area at around 9 am. Reports say that the fire started when workers were welding dents and cracks in a tanker containing oil.

The sparks from the welding ignited fire and the oil tanker exploded. Soon it spread to the nearby tank storing acid and caused a huge fire that engulfed the factory.

The victims have been identified as Kanhaiya Sah, 33, of Bahtauda-3 and Naresh Pashwan, 18, of Chhatapipara-6. Police said the charred remains of their bodies were found later indicating that they had died on the spot.

Two fire engines from Birgunj and Kalaiya aided by a team of Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel as well as locals were finally able to extinguish the fire after one hour.

Apart from human casualties, property worth millions of rupees was destroyed in the incident. The victims’ relatives said the incident occurred due to carelessness of the factory management and demanded action against the guilty and compensation for victims’ families. (nepalnews)
